North Avenue (1600 N.) is the beginning and home stretch of my daily downtown bicycle commute from Chicago's West Side.

The North Avenue Traffic Report is a web-zine about my life as framed by these human-powered movements.

Things I’ve found recently:

1 Balance Gold triple-layer energy bar.
1 head cold
1 pair of shoes
1 new job
1 Marilyn Manson video
2 Refused videos

The energy bar was in a plastic trash bag along with some coffee cups, used paper towels and garbage. I was dumpster diving for camping equipment but all I found was the Rocky Road flavored bar with 15 grams of protein. The wrapper was intact so I stuck it in my pocket for later consumption.

Against better judgment I shaved my beard off. I was not ready for the exposure. The cold morning air cut straight into my face as I biked downtown. The cold stayed in my skull all day, and the next morning I woke up with mucus pressure in my temples and a sore throat. I didn't so much find the head cold as the other way around, but in retrospect, the shearing of my whiskers was just looking for trouble. I did find a couple of compliments about my shapely cheekbones and strong jaw line, which were of little consolation.

Two days prior to finding the energy bar, in the same dumpster, I found an amazing pair of shoes. The oddest thing is that last fall I found a pair that were identical in all but the size. The first pair, twelves, fit me perfect and I have been wearing them ever since. This pair were almost brand new, but they were nines. As I pulled them from the trash a guy waved at me from across the street. He is homeless and whenever I see him around he acts pretty nice and down-to-earth. I could tell he was excited about the shoes so I gave them to him and he made a big deal about how pristine they were before biking off on his beat up ten-speed. You might say I found some good karma, although I've never found much use for religion.

This week I found that my new job in the school library is wonderful. My co-workers are smart and nice. I have been working in the 700’s, which if you know Dewey Decimal, means art books. We have an amazing collection that includes comics and obscure underground stuff like Seth Tobocman. I find interesting reading material every day.

The videos are my most recent find. Marcus and were talking about Marilyn Manson because I used to like industrial music and there is one Marilyn Manson song that I enjoy. It is called "Lunchbox", and while searching for it on Kazaa I accidentally downloaded the video instead of the mp3. Inspiration took over and I downloaded two videos by Refused. Those Swedes can rock out.
